Highgate Neighbourhood Forum June Newsletter
AGM Report
Another lively and well attended AGM last month. We were very lucky to be able to use Lauderdale House - a stunning venue on a gorgeous May evening. Many thanks to the 70+ people who came, and especially to newly elected Hornsey and Wood Green MP Catherine West who not only made her first public appearance as an MP at our AGM, but also favoured the Forum over her Westminster welcome party. There was much lobbying of Catherine over post-AGM drinks until our 10pm curfew. Minutes of the meeting are here.
Hooray! We've just been told we have had our latest bid for planning professional support granted, so we are able to continue the work redrafting the Neighbourhood Plan. There are around 200 consultation responses to take into account so this will be a time-consuming process. However, while work continues behind the scenes for the next few months on this policy document, in the meantime we can get on with putting our Community Action Plan into practice...
...Community Action
There are nine groups so far and It's through these that we hope to make changes in Highgate everyone can see. Hopefully there's something for everyone, from community volunteering and guerilla gardening, to supporting local businesses and working on initiatives for cyclists and pedestrians. There's a complete list here. Around 30 people signed up at the AGM, but please email Maggy if you'd like to join in with any of these, or if there's something you'd like to see happen or lead on.
Athlone House saved from inappropriate development
The Planning Inspector has ruled against the demolition and redevelopment of Athlone house and ruled that a Section 106 order should be enforced to ensure that it is restored. A significant victory for local campaigners. Read more on the Highgate Society website.
Despite massive vociferous and well-orchestrated opposition, work on the two-year Heath Dam Project has begin in earnest. Keep up-to-date with what's happening here
And finally, if you like reality TV this could be for you
The producers of Who DoYou Think You Are, The Voice and Back in Time have been in touch with the Forum as they're looking for a new volunteer family, and who wouldn't want to film in Highgate? They promise an unforgettable educational experience exploring leisure and entertainment habits in decades past for one London family with at least two children of 10+. More details here.
